Smart cards are embedded with a small microchip, which can be programmed to perform specific functions for the end-user. Smart cards can also store up to a thousand times more data than other traditional media (like the magnetic strip) used on credit cards.
The processing power of a smart card makes it ideal to mix and match multiple functions. They are not dependent on online infrastructure and one can deploy multiple applications - like a ration card, passport, driving license, access authorization etc. on a single smart card.
The GO Mumbai Smart Card is the first of its kind travel card in India to incorporate seamless travel across multiple transit systems, whether it be the suburban Railway network or the BEST Bus services. The GO Mumbai card has the capability of storing both "Season Tickets" as well as the "E-purse" for single journey and extension tickets.
Currently the card can be used to travel on
Central & Harbour Railway – Season as well as E-purse
BEST Buses for Season tickets (E-purse to be launched soon)
Western Railway (To be launched soon)
